Eileen's Story

STRONG - On April 6, 2016, Eileen C. (Gildea) McCarthy died at her daughter's home in Strong, ME at the age of eighty. She had been battling cancer since last fall.

Eileen was born in Worcester, MA on January 31, 1936, and grew up in Pawtucket, RI. She graduated from Pawtucket West High School in 1954 and Mount Saint Mary College of Hooksett, NH in 1958. She taught school in Providence, RI and earned a master's degree in Special Education from Rhode Island College. In 1962, she married Francis E. McCarthy. The family moved to Bangor, ME in 1971. Eileen taught in the Bangor schools at the elementary level for twenty five years. She was active in the Bangor Education Association and sang in the folk group at St. Mary's Parish. After retiring, she volunteered at Downeast Elementary School and at the visitor's center at Acadia National Park. Eileen was a dedicated teacher, a devoted mother/grandmother, and a good friend. She also loved reading and sketching.

Eileen is survived by her seven children: Shane, Kieran, Mitch, Thad, Michaela, Tara, and Rory, and their families. She is also survived by two brothers: Gene Gildea of Reno, NV and Joseph Gildea of Pawtucket, RI, and their families. The family will hold a small private memorial.
