Bangor - Efthim Economu, 94, of Bangor, formerly of Waterville, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2017. He was born in Waterville on May 1, 1922, the son of Themistocles and Alexandra (Haxhi) Economu. Efthim attended Waterville public schools graduating from Waterville High School, Class of 1940. He was a Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Colby College with a B.A. degree and a major in French.
He served in the US Navy, World War II from 1943 - 1946, serving in the amphibious forces in the Pacific Theatre on LST991 and was discharged with the rank of LT (jg).
Efthim began his teaching career as a French teacher at Caribou High School from 1946 - 1948; he did graduate work at the University of Maine from 1948 - 49; in 1950, Efthim received his M.A. degree from Middlebury College in the overseas program at the Sorbonne. He was a recipient of a French government fellowship. He taught at the University of Maine in 1950-51, followed by two years of graduate work at Laval University. In 1953-54, he taught at Rumford High School. From 1954-82, Efthim was at Bangor High School and retired as department head of foreign languages.
He did graduate study in programs sponsored by the US Government the summer of 1962 at Central Connecticut State Teachers College and the summers of 1966 and 67 at the University of Rennes and at Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. In 1970, '71 and '72 summers were spent doing extensive travel in Europe.
He was past vice president and president of the Maine chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French; he also was named Maine French Teacher of the Year in 1957.
Economu was a member of the National Education Association, Maine Education Association, Bangor Education Association, St. John's Episcopal Church, and the Bangor Lions Club.
He was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother, Mrs. Barbara Economu; three sisters, Mrs. Sophie York, Mrs. Viola Moran and Mrs. Helen Spaulding; and his nephew, Michael Spaulding, on December 31, 2016. He is survived and remembered by several nieces, nephews and friends.
A time of gathering and visitation will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017, from 9:00 to 10:30 am at Redington Funeral Home, 5 Park Street, Waterville, with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 am at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 60 Eustis Parkway, Waterville, with Rev. John Belicki presiding. Burial will be in the spring in Pine Grove Cemetery, 88 Grove Street, Waterville.
