Edward's Story

ST. ALBANS - Edward T. Walker 85, died Thursday April 9, 2015 at a Portland, ME health care facility following a long illness.

On April 9, Edward Walker was reunited with the love of his life in our Father's heavenly home. Born in Unity, ME, December 25, 1929 to Allen and Jean (Wahl) Walker, Ed spent his early years helping out on the family farm in Unity. This is also where he developed a love of baseball. He was the star catcher at Unity High School where they won their championship all four years he attended. The senior year trophy showed a catcher to honor his contributions to the team. It was also in high school that Ed developed his skills and love of woodworking. Some of the items he made in high school are still used and cherished by his children and grandchild. This was a lifelong hobby for Ed, which after the family farm was destroyed he then pursued as a career. It was also thanks to this career that while working for a local contractor, Ed met the love of his life, his beautiful bride Velma Hebert. Together they raised two children and taught them about family, service, and community. Ed did this through his membership as a Mason and a member of the Shrine. He was also member of the Board of Selectmen and various other committees in St. Albans, serving for many years. After being self employed as a contractor for a number of years, Ed then pursued a 20 year career as a U.S Postal Service Rural Letter Carrier. In his retirement years, Ed continued to do woodworking and several area schools benefitted with custom mobile bookcases. He also enjoyed making latch hook rugs and many of his friends and family were gifted with his work. He is predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Velma (Hebert) Walker on March 18, 2010. He is survived by his daughter Patricia Walker of St. Albans; his son Terrance Walker and wife Jessica, of South Portland; his granddaughter Olivia Walker of South Portland; his brother Eugene and Maryanne Walker of Topsham; his sister-in-law Judith and Bruce Miller of Mechanic Falls; his sister-in-law Barbara and Gary Pelletier of Rumford; brother-in-law George and Cheryl Hebert of Auburn; sister-in-law Janice and Lionel Turbide of Casco; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
