Edna's Story

NEWPORT - Edna Ellen Chambers, 100, died March 29, 2016, at a Pittsfield hospital. She was born January 1, 1916, in Cabot, Vermont, a daughter of Winfield and Josephine (Harvey) Houston.

She was a graduate of Cabot High School, Class of 1933. Edna married Carl Chambers in Belmont, Mass., on October 13, 1938, and they moved to Corinna in 1939. Edna and Carl moved to Newport in 1945, where they owned and operated a dairy farm for 22 years. SAD # 48 bought the farm in 1965 and built Nokomis Regional High on the land. She was a past member of the Sebasticook Grange # 306 and past member of the Night Drifters Snowmobile Club in Detroit. She attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Newport. She was a member of the Newport Senior Citizens and was a longtime volunteer for Meals for ME. She also was to receive the Boston Post Cane for Newport. Edna enjoyed a number of winters in St. Petersburg, Zephyrhills and Hernando, Florida.

Edna is survived by a son, Robert Chambers and wife, Patricia, of Brunswick; a daughter, Barbara Lander and husband, Mahlon, of Newport; sister, Wilma Sorenson of Burlington, VT; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; 4 brothers, Earl, Donovan, Paul and Howard Houston; 3 sisters, Hester Hemenway, Madine Miller and Evelyn Houston; 2 grandsons, Robert W. Chambers Jr. and Russ Batchelder; and foster daughter, Annette Batchelder.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 1, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport, with the Revs. George Finnemore and Brian Woodbury officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of services. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Newport, later in the spring.
