Edith's Story

COREA - Edith Ina Woodward, 97, a long life resident of Corea, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Judith, in Gouldsboro on May 23, 2014. She was born in Corea, on March 8, 1917 to Elroy and Hattie (Rolfe) Stewart.

She graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1934 and married Ernest Woodward Jr in 1940. Edith was head cook at the Gouldsboro Grammar and Peninsula Schools for 49 years, retiring at age 88. She was very active in the community: superintendent of the Corea Baptist Church, past member of the school board, and current member of the of the Gouldsboro Historical Society, Corea Cemetery Association, Pythian Sisters and the only remaining charter member of the Seaside Grange. Edith enjoyed reading and traveling and visited many American and European cities.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn Carver, of Ellsworth, Dale Woodward, of Gouldsboro, Everett Woodward, of Alfred, and Judith Newenham, of Gouldsboro; grandson, Nick Woodward, of Corea, and 12 other grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Wayne Woodward and wife, Lucille, of Jonesport, sister-in-law, Barbara Hall, of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Edith was predeceased by her husband, Ernest, brothers, Everett Stewart, of West Newbury, MA. and Volney Stewart, of Corea; grandson, Curt Woodward and daughter-in-law, Jean Woodward, both of Alfred, and daughter-in-law, Kaye Page, of Ellsworth as well as many brother and sisters-in-law.

Family and friends are invited to visit 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 at Bragdon- Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Corea Baptist Church with Rev. Phyllis Merritt and Pastor Joshua Greene officiating. Burial will be at the Corea Cemetery, immediately following service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corea Baptist Church, c/o Prudence Henry, 154 Crowley Island, Corea, ME 04624.
