Holden and Bangor
- Edith L. Stearns, 91, passed away with family by her side July 1, 2017. She was born July 22, 1925, in Framingham, MA, the daughter of Raymond and Ruth (Harrington) Hunter.
Edith was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Albert E. Stearns; a son, Roger; a daughter, Ethel; and by brothers, Norman and Howard Hunter.
Edie and Al raised their family in Westborough, MA, but they fell in love with Maine a little more with each trip north to visit family. They eventually moved to Jefferson in 1983, and they became members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Farmingdale. In 2013, Edie moved to Holden to be closer to family. She was a hard worker, raising five children, while sewing most of their clothing, from shirts and pants to jackets and suits. They always grew a large vegetable garden, and she canned, froze, and preserved vegetables and fruit each year, usually a few hundred pints and quarts, according to her journal, which she kept for over 50 years.
Edie loved to read about everything she could get her hands on, and had quite an extensive home library of books, new and old. She was very talented with needle and thread and continued to produce arts and crafts works even into her later years. She had won numerous awards for quilts, homemade dolls, and stuffed animals, etc., which she made for family and friends. She often entered into competitions at various fairs.
Edie is survived by sons Ronald E., of Mary Esther, FL, Gerard H. "Jerry" of Northborough, MA, and Brian A. and wife, Janice, of Holden; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; her sister, Linda Robinson of Westborough, MA; and brother Raymond Hunter of Warner, NH.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Brewer Chapel of Brookings-Smith, 55 So. Main St., Brewer. Private burial in Fairview Cemetery, in Jefferson, will be at a later date. Condolences to the family may be expressed at BrookingsSmith.com.
