Stockton Springs, ME, and Idaho
- Edgar Harvey Douglas passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 31, 2016, in Belfast, Maine, with family by his side at the age of 93. He was born on May 29, 1923, in Waterville, Maine, son of Roy and Mary Douglas.
One of five siblings, he attended schools in Waterville, Maine, and Groton, Massachusetts, before enlisting in the U.S. Army 83rd Infantry Division in 1943. Overseeing food service operations for his division in France, he met and married Paulette Meriaux on May 19, 1945, and brought her and her family back to the United States.
In the late 1940's Edgar acquired and operated the Red Top dairy farm and store in North Belgrade, Maine. He also obtained his license to become an Insurance Agent for Mutual of Omaha, a career he continued for 35 years, earning many awards as top salesman in Maine. In 1961, he purchased Whisperwood Lodge & Cottages in North Belgrade, which he operated with Paulette for 24 years while maintaining his very successful sales career.
Edgar had a passion and enthusiasm for life and lived it to his fullest. He loved pursuing challenging endeavors and had a zest for meeting new people. There wasn't anything that he set his mind to that he couldn't accomplish. His other hobbies included antiquing, refinishing furniture, cooking, gardening, fishing, hunting, listening to music, singing, dancing and even flying. He loved his pets, his family and life itself!
After Paulette died unexpectedly in 1989, Edgar wintered in Palm Bay, Florida, and spent the summers in the home which he built in North Belgrade, Maine. In 2001 he reacquainted with a childhood friend, Bernadette C. Roy Tilton, and married her on November 26, 2001, in Nashua, New Hampshire. After a thorough study of the bible with Jehovah's Witnesses, Edgar came to appreciate the hope that one day he would be resurrected on a beautifully clean earth, free from sickness old age and death Revelations 21: 3,4. Edgar and Bernadette spent winters in Boise, Idaho with one of Bernadette's daughters and summers in Stockton Springs, Maine, at French's Point with another daughter.
Edgar's engaging personality touched many hearts for which he will forever be remembered. He was predeceased by his wife, Paulette; and two daughters, Janette Young and Arlette Hatt.
