Earle's Story

NORTHPORT - Earle Paul Lear, 87, of Northport passed away December 28, 2014, at Waldo County General Hospital with his family gathered at his bedside.

He was born December 4, 1927, the son of Marion (Thomas) and Raymond Lear.

Earle graduated from Crosby High School. He married his beloved wife, Joyce (Rich) in 1950. He worked as a brick-layer and stone mason and trained two of his sons in the trade. Examples of his work can be seen throughout Maine and New England. He helped build the Waldo County General Hospital, Belfast Area High School, and many stone walls throughout the countryside. He was also an ambulance driver in Belfast in the 1950's.

He devoted much of his time to volunteer work, including the Northport Volunteer Fire Department, local food pantries and soup kitchens, and he donated blood to the American Red Cross on a regular basis. Earle also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and spending time with his family. He was an excellent singer and all of his children have fond memories of him singing to them, especially on long car rides.

Earle is survived by his wife, Joyce, and six children: Linda Lear and her husband, Phillip Heusler; Steven Lear and his wife, Jane Sutcliiff; Alan Lear; Gayle Lear; Randy Lear and his wife, Patricia; and Debra Lear. He will be fondly missed by four very special grandchildren: Neil Pendleton, Meaghan Heusler, Rebekah Lear-Pendleton and Eric Lear. He also leaves behind two special sister in-laws: Lourene Rich, and Polly Snowdeal and her husband, Bernard; as well as a special cousin, Charlie Thomas and his wife, Alice. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Garfield Lear.

Per Earle's wishes, no services will be held.
