Earl's Story

NORTHEAST HARBOR - Earl Littlefield Hodgkins, 95, died April 9, 2014 at home in Northeast Harbor surrounded by family. Earl was born in Eden, Maine son of Ruby Zelma (Salisbury) Hodgkins and Ludolph Frank Hodgkins on Feb. 10, 1919.

The family moved to Northeast Harbor, where Ludolph opened Sunset Garage. Earl graduated from Gilman High School in 1938 and went on to the University of Maine, earning his Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He was in the ROTC program and went directly from graduation to active duty as a Second Lieutenant in the combat engineers. He was on active duty for 44 months in the combat engineers of which 38 months were overseas in the European Theater of World War II. Earl was awarded the campaign medal with five stars. He separated from the service in January 1946 with the rank of Major. He married, the love of his life, Martha Page on June 9, 1946 at the Congregational Church in Bath, ME. They were married for 54 years, until Martha's death on Feb. 27, 2002.

Earl retired from a long and successful career as a civilian engineer for the U.S. Air Force, Department of Defense in March 1978. Upon his retirement Earl and Martha returned home, to Maine, taking up residence in Winter Harbor where Earl was very active on many civic committees and at the Prospect Harbor Methodist Church. Earl's garden was the envy of many. After Martha's death in 2002 Earl returned to Northeast Harbor to live with Bill and Susan. Earl loved living with Bill, Susan, Chris, Dan, and Corey because their activity kept him young and busy. Earl was very involved with all the sports, music and church activities. Earl was given a plaque for being the oldest sports booster at M.D.I. High School where he spent countless hours helping in the cook shack. Earl loved hearing about each of our passions. He had a way of making people know they were important to him. His willingness to give of himself is a lesson not to be forgotten.
