- Earl Clifton Hartley, 85, died August 12, 2016, ten years to the day after the death of his wife, Shirley. He was born May 12, 1931, to Howard and Bessie (Haynes) Hartley, in the back bedroom of the family farmhouse in Corinna, where he lived his entire life.
Earl started his career with his father as a dairy, potato and cattle farmer. He took his first load of cattle to the market alone in Brighton, MA, at the age of 16.
Earl and his brother Perley purchased a used car business in Dexter in the early 1960s. In 1968 they purchased the Dodge dealership in Dexter on the Corinna Road. It was destroyed by fire in 1974. In 1973, they built the Chevy-Buick dealership in Dover-Foxcroft. Earl sold it in 1981 and started working for Perley, and retired working for his son, Steve, in 1996. His favorite pastime was caring for his garden and property. He especially enjoyed mowing his lawn with his John Deere and Cub mowers.
Earl was a member of the Parian Lodge, Masons of Corinna, the Anah Shrine, the Dexter Club and the Corinna United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with a group of local friends and fellow farmers, "The Farmers in the Dell" at Ripley Pond.
He is survived by 2 sons, Steven and wife, Marilee Hartley, of Newport and James and wife, Maribeth Hartley, of Scarborough; 4 daughters, Janet and husband, Rich Miller, of Taft, CA, Laurel and husband, David Barker, of Farmingdale, Barbara and husband, Brent Mower, of St. Albans and Judith and husband, Peter McCann Jr., of Hopkinton, RI; a sister ,Dorothy Nason of Newport; 2 sisters-in-law, Jane Jacobson of Portland and Judie Hartley of Corinna; a brother-in-law, Frank Verock of Acton; his companion, Beryl Gray of Corinna; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin and his wife, Dennis and Marion Pearson of Canada; and his best friend since grade school, Ken Veazie and wife, Virginia, of Corinna. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (Jacobson) Hartley; his siblings, Robert, Leverett, Perley, Darrell, Hazel and Gladys; and his granddaughter, Sarah.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. A Masonic service will be held at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 20, at the Corinna United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terence McKinley officiating.
