MILLINOCKET - Dudley W. "Babe" Carter, 87, husband of the late Anne R. (Picard) Carter, passed away Saturday December 26, 2015 at the Millinocket Regional Hospital after a short battle with cancer. He was born June 29th, 1928 in Millinocket, the son of Albert D. W. and Ethelyn M. (Morris) Carter.
Dudley attended Millinocket schools and joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. During his service he served aboard the USS General H.W. Butner (AP-113) and was present on active duty in support of the amphibious landings at Inchon during the Korean War. While in the service he traveled to North Africa, transited the Panama Canal and visited China, Korea and enjoyed a couple of extended stays at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
After completing his Navy service he returned to Millinocket and began his career working for the Great Northern Paper Company. After a few years working on the wood lot he began an apprentice pipe-fitter training program in a job that lasted for 35 years. After retiring from the GNP he continued to work as a contractor servicing and rebuilding paper machines at the two GNP mills, finally retiring after 42 years of service. He was a 50 year member of local #485 of the Plumbers & Pipefitters union.
In retirement he enjoyed visiting family and he and Anne maintained a winter home near Ft. Myers, FL where they were close to other family members and enjoyed the company of other friends from the mid-west and Canada. He also attended several reunions with Navy shipmates sponsored by the H. W. Butner Association.
He is survived by his sons Dudley Carter and wife Kathleen of Nashua, NH, Roland Carter and wife Linda of Merrimack, NH and step son Terry Picard and wife Donna of Chelmsford, MA. Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Brothers Duane Carter, Paul Carter and wife Maryann all of Millinocket, and sister, Mary Griffin of Presque Isle, ME. Also several nieces and nephews including Nathalie Bosse of Millinocket.
He was predeceased by his brother Melvin Carter of Middletown, CT and sister "Sis" Edwina Caron of Millinocket.
Dudley's family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Millinocket Regional Hospital, Dr. Dunstan's office and at the EMMC's Lafayette Family Cancer Center for their kind and compassionate care.
