Dr. Charles's Story
BEAVERCREEK, OHIO - Dr. Charles W. Ryan, age 82, of Beavercreek, Ohio passed away peacefully and with his family near on November 7, 2014. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cornelius and Catherine Ryan he lived most of his life in Maine, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
Charles was a career teacher and college professor who believed that education is the foundation for everything a person can accomplish. He began his career as a history teacher in Williamson, New York and after completing graduate school and his Ph.D. he became a professor at the University of Maine. He remained in Maine for 17 years and rose to the position of Associate Dean of the College of Education. His next achievement was an appointment as Dean of the College of Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania until 1988. His last academic position was at Wright State University where he was the Director of Graduate Programs. There he championed the addition of a doctoral program to the academic curriculum. He was a scholar and prolific writer in his specialty until his retirement in 2010. He served as Professor Emeritus at Wright State until 2013. He was a passionate sports fan with his allegiance to the teams in the states where he lived. He loved to watch the Ohio State Buckeyes or the Wright State basketball and baseball teams. His sports enthusiasm also included volunteering at professional sporting events and he was a fixture at the ATP Master's Tennis Tournament in Cincinnati for 25 consecutive years. His interest in golf had him volunteer at several U.S. Opens and the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Karen (Moles) Ryan, his three children, Mary Ryan of Denver, Colorado, Katherine (Ryan) Derrick of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Chas Ryan, of Annandale, Virginia. He is also survived by his brother, James, of Gainesville, Virginia, and his six grandchildren. He was a loving father, husband, brother, grandfather, and a friend to all.
Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. and a memorial service to follow at Tobias Funeral Home in Beavercreek on Saturday, November, 15, 2014.
