Douglas's Story

EAST MACHIAS - Douglas C. Cunningham, Sr., 55, died unexpectedly at his home, June 13, 2014. He was born to Theodore H. Cunningham and Edith L. Cunningham in Calais, ME on Aug. 18, 1958.

Doug had a 25 year career in corrections at Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport. He began his career as a corrections officer and worked up to Administrative Sargent before retiring in 2012. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved the Red Sox and Patriots.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Cunningham; daughter, Christy Cote of Belfast; son, Douglas Cunningham, Jr. of East Machias; sister, Deborah Brown and husband, Reb of Jonesport; brother, Gary Abolafia and wife, Sue of Wallingford, CT; step-granddaughter, Kristin Miller; two grandchildren, Justin and Jordan; three nieces, Shannon, Salena, and Victoria; and two nephews, Gary Jr. and Kenny and predeceased by his nephew, Broc.

A remembrance of his life will be held at Bragdon Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias, 3 p.m. Thursday, June 19.
