Dorothy's Story

PORTLAND - Dorothy Louise Cleaves Hirvela, 86, of Portland, died Thursday February 12, 2015 at Orono Commons, with her family by her side.

Dorothy was the daughter of George & Louise Prince Cleaves. She graduated from Falmouth High School and attended Northeastern Business College. She worked at American Can Co, Standard Linen Service, and ran Dot's Daycare out of her Falmouth home.

Dorothy loved the years she spent caring for children, watching them grow into young adults. She cared for her own grandchildren and their friends as well as several other children. She spent many hours planning activities and creating a fun and safe environment. When she retired she very much enjoyed her years living at Northfield Green in Portland with many wonderful friends around her whom she greatly missed when she moved to Presque Isle to be with family.

She was very involved with the Falmouth Grange and St. Peters Episcopal Church on Washington Ave,Portland, she made friends where ever she went.

She enjoyed sewing, crafts, garage sales, church suppers and Christmas fairs, but most of all she enjoyed being with her family.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, husband Leroy Hirvela, grandson Josh Crowley, sister Caroline Dorney, nephew Patrick Dorney.

She is survived by her daughter and husband, Linda & Michael Dunn of Bangor, grandsons Richard Crowley III and Andrew Dunn, sister Bernice Cleaves, nieces Patricia Wilson, Corinne Brown, Cathy Dorney-Bron, Carol Dorney and nephew John Dorney.
