Dorothy's Story

ATTLEBORO, MA - Dorothy Ellen Dow Beck Philbrook Bishop, 93, died surrounded by her family on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015. Born on August 1, 1921 in Waterbury, Connecticut, to the late Rankin Dudley and Elvira Ann (Smullin) Dow. After graduating nursing school in Vermont she worked at Heaton Hospital in New York City as a nurse during World War II. After marriage her life was filled with taking care of her children, being active in her church, and volunteering in her community, Caribou, ME. Her retirement years were spent in Belfast, ME. Hobbies she enjoyed were, playing games, square dancing, gardening, quilting, knitting, fishing, and walking. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Jody Ball of Pompano Beach, FL; daughter Barbara (Steve) Pelkey of Gorham, ME and their children Kyle, Stacey (Michael) Barlow, and Jeremy; daughter, C. Ann (Glenn) Larsen of Norton, MA and their children Kurt (Sharon), Erik (Brittany), Tom, and Lisa; daughter, Cheryl (Michael) Lunn of Niceville, FL and their children Bobby and Nikki (Logan) Seagraves; and son Wesley Philbrook II of Lexington, MA; stepdaughter Carol (Gary) Spinney of Rockport, ME; stepdaughter Nancy Tracy of Brewer, ME; and two great-grandchildren. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her previous husbands William Beck, Wesley Philbrook, and Robert Bishop; a daughter Virginia Beck; a sister, Vivian Dow; and a brother, Rankin Dow. Her family will have a private graveside memorial at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Fort Fairfield, ME. Donations in her memory may be made to your local hospice.
