Donald's Story

HOULTON - Donald H. Thompson, 79, passed on Dec. 9, 2014, at a local health care facility. He was born July 22, 1935, in Houlton, the son of R. Hibbert and Dot (Dorothy Varney) Thompson.

Donnie was well known as hard worker and began driving truck for Walter Davis on solo trips to Boston at the age of 15 and later drove truck for O'Donnell's Express. In 1955 he went to work for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad for more than 42 years and retired as conductor. He was proud to be part of the railroad and often shared stories of his co-workers and the practical jokes they pulled on one another. At the same time, Donnie served 18 years as an auxiliary policeman for the Houlton Police Department. In May 1958, Donnie was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army. He served two years in Germany with pride and returned as a Sergeant. He continued to serve and additional three years in the National Guard. Following retirement, Donnie worked at the Houlton Christian Academy and served as deacon at the Linneus Freewill Baptist Church.

Donnie was married on September 2, 1957, to his wife, Sylvia (Tracy), and they have been married for 57 years and had three children. Donnie was a proud father and grandfather. His granddaughters were his pride and joy.

Donnie is survived by his wife, Sylvia (Tracy) Thompson of Houlton; two sons, Bob and his wife, Betsy, of Drexel Hill, PA, and David and his wife, Deborah, of Bangor; his daughter, Leanne Harvey and her husband, Dudley, of Brewer; his granddaughters, Megan DeHaven and her husband, Michael, of Upper Darby, PA, and Molly Thompson of Camp Hill, PA and her finance, Caleb Miller, of Lancaster, PA; and one great-granddaughter, Nora DeHaven. Donnie had several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, Arden Thompson; and his sister, Patsy Davis. A special thank you to the staff at Madigan Estates for taking such good care of our father.

Friends may call at Dunn Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 13, from12:00 noon until the time of the service 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. James Gardner officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in the spring. Please do not send flowers, a family member has severe allergies.
