Donald's Story

EAST MILLINOCKET - Lewiston - Donald L Smith, (known to many as Bigfoot) age 60, passed away very unexpectedly on February 17, 2015, at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He has gone home to his Lord and Savoir. Donald was born on March 24, 1954 to Donald Smith and Marjorie LaCrosse.

On June 10, 1977 Donnie married the love of his life Dean (Miller) Smith, known to all as Deanne. Together they raised five children. Donnie worked for many years for the Great Northern Paper Mill until he became disabled

Donnie was an avid sportsman, he loved fishing and picking fiddleheads in the spring. He enjoyed doing karaoke with his family. Donnie truly had the gift to gab. So many people will miss their conversations with him. He loved his dog Bronze. Donnie loved God, his family and his country. He was very close to his pastor and special friend Ralph Jacobs with whom he spent countless hours in prayer.

Donnie served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Upon his return he became a member of the Disabled American Veterans, here he served in numerous positions at both the local chapter and the State level.

Donnie with his wife Deanne ran the Saturday night dances at Chapter 22 in Medway as a fundraiser to help Veterans.

Donnie worked tirelessly to help Disabled Veterans and will be remembered and missed by many.

He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Deanne Smith. Three sons, Larry Elkins, Corey Smith and his wife Diana, Dylan Smith. Two daughters, Kim and her husband Kelly Chase, Heidi and her husband Jon Vose. Six brothers, Terry Smith and his wife Diane, Monte Smith and his life partner Shelly Hall, Colin Smith, Randy Smith, Warren Brasslett and his wife Rena, Chipper Curtis. Nine sisters, Kathy and her husband Andy Ginn, Sherry and her husband Dennis Smith, Jean Brasslett and her life partner Richard McKay, Harriet and her husband Gary Conard, Pam and her husband Marty Carmichael, Kelly Hillborn, Tina McFarland, Nicki McFarland, Rhonda McFarland. Many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Donnie was predeceased by his father Donald Smith, his mother Marjorie LaCrosse, stepmother Dorothy Smith, brother Gary, an infant granddaughter Amber Elkins.

The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nurses that gave Donnie the best of care at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. Special thanks to his son in-law Kelly Chase for all the special care he gave to Donnie in his final days.

The funeral service will be held at the Lighthouse Ministries Church, Pattagumpus Road, Medway on Thursday February 26, at 12 noon. Services conducted by Pastor Ralph Jacobs.

The family invites all friends to join us at the East Branch Snow Rovers hall on the Hathaway Road in East Millinocket following the service for food, drink and conversation.

Military burial will be announced in the spring.
