Donald Lee Jernigan, 88, passed away Sept. 26, 2016, at the VA Maine Healthcare Center after a short illness. He was born in Bertie County, NC, the son of William D. Jernigan and Adeline Jenkins.
Donald was raised in North Carolina. He joined the Navy at a young age and eventually moved to the Army Air Corps. When the Air Corps dissolved, he joined the Air Force, serving as a military policeman. His last assignment was at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor. After leaving the military, Donald settled in the Bangor area. He worked as a boiler technician for Webber Oil for many years and then in pipe maintenance at the University of Maine. Donald was an avid collector of many things, including coins and guns. He particularly enjoyed target shooting.
He is survived by his partner of 62 years, Marguerite Wellington of Orrington and her son Jerry. He is also survived by a special niece Loretta Sherman of VA and many family members.
In keeping with Donald's wishes, there will be no services. He will be buried with his parents at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Messages and memories may be shared with the family at kileyandfoley.com
