Donald's Story

Text size

Bangor - Donald Fredrick Hayner, 93, passed peacefully into Glory on May 12, 2017, in Bangor, Maine. He was born September 21, 1923 in Troy, New York to Thomas L. and Florence (Duffy) Haner.

Don was the embodiment of the Greatest Generation. When he was 16 years old he was part of FDRs CCCs. At age 17, he joined the Navy where he served through three wars WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He was a shipfitter on USS Hornet (CV-8) at the time of her sinking during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands. He was a Master Diver in the deep sea diving program out of Washington, DC at age 28. Don was on UDT Team 4/22, precursor to the SEAL teams, out of Norfolk, VA, during the 50s and then spent many years on submarines. He was a plank owner of USS Iowa (BB 61) and was on the voyage that carried President Franklin Roosevelt across the Atlantic in 1943 for meetings with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin. Dons Naval career was long and varied. Oh, the stories he could tell! He lived a bold and adventurous life and we were blessed to be a part of it.

Don was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Thomas J. Haner, and grandson Shane B. Ferrante.
He is survived by his sister MaryLee Hayner of East Greenbush, NY, two daughters, Gaye Ferrante and partner Mark Queeney of Boothbay, ME and Carol and husband Mike Kutz of LaGrange, ME. He also leaves, as his legacy, four much-loved grandchildren, Beth and husband Donnie Carter, Johannah Yoder, Zachary Kutz, and Nathanael Kutz as well as two great-grandchildren Halle Kutz and Ethan Yoder; he was so proud of them! He also leaves many nieces and nephews and their children who loved and were loved by their Uncle Don.

Don will be buried at sea as per his wishes and an old-fashioned Irish wake (celebration of his life) will be held by family this summer in New York.
