- Dolores Daigle St. John passed away peacefully on June 14, 2017, at Crosswinds in Fort Kent, at the age of 95. She is now playing cards in heaven. Dolores was born on February 2, 1922, in Fort Kent, to Michel and Beatrice (Plourde) Daigle.
Dolores lived a full and busy life. She raised six productive and successful children. She was a great mom. While raising her children she worked several jobs, including picking potatoes on the family farm. For a while, she was in charge of cafeteria at Community High School in Fort Kent and also worked at Grants Department Store. When her husband Louis became ill, she became an entrepreneur, managing her own business (Dolores' Fabric & Crafts).
She was active in the Fort Kent Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Kent Business and Professional Women's Club, where she served as president. After retirement Dolores dedicated much of her energy to Aroostook Area Agency on Aging. She worked for Meals on Wheels for 18 years helping bring meals to the homebound elderly in Fort Kent, Frenchville, and St. Agatha. She was also a member of the Aroostook Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Advisory Council. She served as secretary and was tireless in her effort to raise money for programs that benefited the Valley's older citizens, raising thousands of dollars for the Aroostook Area on Aging and RSVP. She spent more than 200 hours raising money and doing volunteer work.
In 2000 she was one of twelve women chosen as the Women of Aroostook. They described her as an "Unsung Heroine" of the St. John Valley. Two of her grandchildren chose to write their school reports on someone they admire about her.
Dolores is survived by three sons, Michael and his friend Dottie of Westbrook, Peter and wife Judy of Winterville, and Timothy and wife Kim of Jericho, VT, and two daughters, Sylvia and husband Walt of Pinellas Park, FL, and Beatrice and husband George Simon of Millinocket, daughter-in-law Marcy St. John of Ohio. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, and five and a half great-grandchildren. Dolores was predeceased by her husband Louis, son Ralph, and all of her ten siblings, Eva, Louis, Mary Ann, Essie, Anysie, Norman, Bernadette, Gilberta, Roland, and Antonia.
The wishes of the deceased is that there be no wake. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Fort Kent, with burial at the Fort Kent Cemetery after the service. Reverend Nadeau will officiate. Friends who wish may join the family at the Knights of Columbus Hall after the service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation in Dolores' memory to Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, P.O. Box 1288, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Funeral Services are in the care of Daigle Funeral Home, Fort Kent, ME.
