Diana's Story

NEW HAVEN, CT - Diana Vilas Gladden, age 76, of New Haven, CT died peacefully on Wednesday, March 9 at the Mary Wade Nursing Home in New Haven. Diana was the life partner of Richard Huie of Branford. Born on March 23, 1939 in New Haven to Margaret (Van Pelt) and Charles (Carl) H. Vilas.

The family moved to Branford in the 1940s where Diana graduated from Branford High School in 1956 and from Vassar College in 1960 where she received a degree in mathematics. That summer she studied music under Nadia Boulanger at The American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, France. In 1963 Diana received an MFA from Yale School of Music and then under a Fulbright scholarship studied music in Madras, India.

Diana began her career in industry at AT&T working in computer systems and eventually moved to a similar position at Southern New England Telephone in New Haven. She worked part-time at H&R Block where she met Richard. She went on to found her own management consulting company: Systems and Futures where she traveled the U.S. and Canada lecturing management groups at some of the largest corporations.

Diana and Richard were residents of Branford for many years and were members of Troupers Light Opera Company of Darien, CT, performing in many Gilbert and Sullivan musicals. She became interested in Race Walking and qualified as a judge in that sport. Diana retired in 1998, and with Richard, moved to her summer home in Sinclair, ME, in 2010. They returned to Branford in 2011.

A Memorial service will be held at a future time at the W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St., Branford. Burial will follow at Northford Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Connecticut Chapter, 2911 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06518.
