Denise's Story

LITTLE DEER ISLE - Denise Beryl "Denny" Hardy was born on February 27, 1932 to the late Clyde and Vera Snowman in Castine, Maine. She passed away peacefully at the Island Nursing Home on February 29, 2016, with her youngest daughter by her side.

Denny was the salutatorian of her graduating class at Deer Isle High School. She lived and worked in Springfield, MA as a bookkeeper, marrying Gerard P. Fontaine. After his death, she returned to Maine to raise her family. She enjoyed needlepoint, quilt making, sewing, and baking. Denny was a lifelong member of the Deer Isle Grange, as well as an active member of the Saunders Memorial Congregational Church and the Ladies Aid Sewing Circle. In midlife, she met again and married her high school sweetheart, Myron. They started and ran Mydens Bakery in Little Deer Isle. Denny loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a strong woman and dedicated mother and grandmother. She was able to overcome many obstacles in her lifetime. Denny will always be cherished.

Denny is survived by her husband of 43 years, Myron S. Hardy, Sr.; three children- Steven Fontaine of Little Deer Isle, Taryn Monroe and husband, Ken of Winter Harbor, and Wendy Dyer of Little Deer Isle; a sister in law- Mary P. Hardy; eight grandchildren-Jessica Grant and husband, Patrick, Jada Butler (Craig), Jason Dyer (Holly), Lindsey Aubrey and husband, Ryne, Brett Fontaine (Kassie), Adam Dyer (Connie), Seth Dyer and wife, Ashley, and Justin Fontaine; seven great-grandchildren- Graham and Saylor Grant, Keegan and Judson Butler, Jessaniel and Josiah Dyer and Leah Fontaine. She is also survived by several cousins and their families.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers-Jeffrey and Clyde Jr; first husband-Gerard Fontaine; her two infant children-Valerie Ann and Frank Leslie; a special son in law- William "Billy" E. Dyer.

There will be a graveside service at Grays Hill Cemetery on March 5, 2016 at 10am with a reception to follow at Saunders Memorial Congregational Church Vestry. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Saunders Memorial Congregational Church. Denny's family would like to share their appreciation for the care given and kindness shown by the staff at the Island Nursing Home and Hancock County Healthcare Hospice.
