CASTINE - Dawn (Payson) Safford, 84, died on Saturday Sept. 26, 2015 from injuries sustained from a fall, with her loving family by her side. She was born on June 13, 1931 in Ashland the daughter of Harold T. and Ethel F. (Dickson) Payson.
Dawn was a very private person, with a passion for knitting. She belonged to the Monday morning knitting group at the Castine Library and the Tuesday Shawl Ministry at the Main Street Church. Dawn retired to Castine to live with her sister in 2007. Since moving she has knitted more than 1,400 preemie caps for babies at EMMC. During her first years in Castine you would find Dawn reading to the young children at the Otter House Day Care.
She is survived by her siblings; brother Richard Payson and wife Janet of Millbrook AL, sisters Bette Norris of Castine and Patricia Payson of Orland, daughter-in-law Laurie Safford of Largo, FL. Grandchildren: Amy Safford whom Dawn raised as her own, Amanda Meyers and fiancé Michael Porrini; Jayson Meyers, Tamara Harrison and husband Cory. Great-Grandchildren; Ayla Safford whom Dawn raised for seven years, Isabelle Freeman, Kayden Freeman, Gianna Porrini and Mike Porrini Jr. along with 8 Nieces and Nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Daughter Susan Taylor, Son Alan Safford, brothers Paul Payson and Robert Payson and nephew L. Joseph Norris.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday October 10, 2015 at Castine Cemetery with her nephew Rev. Aaron Payson and Rev. Tim Hall officiating. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Dawn's memory to Shall Ministry at Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine P.O Box 108 Castine, Maine 04421.
