David's Story

HERMON - David Oaksman Smiley IV, 68, peacefully passed away Monday, March 21, 2016, with his wife, Harriet, by his side at EMMC. Dave was born Aug. 1, 1947, in Bangor, son of the last Arline and David O. Smiley III.

David grew up in Brewer, attended Brewer schools and was a member of the class of 1966. After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served for 12 years. During the Vietnam War Dave was a B-52 mechanic stationed in Guam, the Philippines, Pease Air Base and Loring Air Base. After his time in the Air Force, Dave attended Beals College and then graduated from Husson College with a degree in accounting. Out of college Dave went on to work at Haverlock, Estes & Curran, and later became controller of Hawkes Nest in Brewer and also was controller of his parent's business, Smiley's in downtown Bangor. Then he went on to start his own successful business Smileys Financial Services, Inc. Dave's hobbies included fly-fishing for brookies, being an accomplished woodworker and playing the guitar, especially the Ventures. Dave and Harriet and the whole family have wonderful memories of sailing the coast of Maine in dad's sailboats. Dave was a member of Essex Street Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years and together for 39 years, Harriet (Weymouth); his son, David O. Smiley V and his wife, Robin, of Sanbornville, N.H.; sister, Elizabeth M. Smiley of Abbott; brother, Thomas Smiley and wife, Deborah of Brewer; grandchildren, Emily K. Smiley of Sanbornville, N.H.; nephew, Jonathan D. Smiley of Brewer; stepchildren, Bruce Weymouth and wife, LIsa, of Stockholm, Beth Libby and friend, Justin, of Gorham, Richard Kenney of Portland; stepgrandchildren, Ashley Pomroy, Kayla Sprague, Clint Libby, Bruce Weymouth Jr., Chelsea Weymouth and Jacob Weymouth; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; and his nephew, Adam T. Smiley.

Interment will be in the spring at the family cemetery plot in Falls Cemetery, Brenton.
