Darrell's Story

OWLS HEAD - Darrell Marston Smith, 57, lost his thirteen month battle with cancer on May 11, 2015.

Darrell was born on May 23, 1957 in Rockland, the third child of Irving and Marilyn Smith.

Always a scholar, he graduated with honors from

Rockland District High School in 1975. He attended the University of Maine in Orono, then transferred to Findlay College in Findlay, Ohio in the newly established Equestrian Program, again graduating with honors. He was a private trainer of cutting horses in Kansas and Texas before moving to Florida.

Darrell eventually opened his own training facility in Jupiter, Florida for pleasure horses and riders with his clients and students winning numerous championships.

Darrell's love of horses began as a youth showing the family pony, Tonka and his mares, Satin Doll and Comanche Bonnetta at Tri-County and Maine Horse Association horse shows and at the Eastern States Exposition in the 4-H program

After moving to Florida, Darrell met his best friend and true love, Tina Guerra. They were married on November 21, 1992. They welcomed a daughter, Melanie, in January 1997.

Dear to his heart was coming home to Maine in the summer, spending time with family at the family cottage at Norton Pond where fishing was a priority and teaching his daughter to fish as well.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Tina; daughter, Melanie; his parents of Owls Head; brothers, Craig, Mark and Jeff; sisters, Lisa Smith Shain and Kerri Smith. Many aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday July 9 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Rockland, with reception following in the parish hall.
