Darrell's Story

CORINNA - Darrell L. Hartley, 86, died peacefully May 6, 2016 at a Dexter health care facility following a long illness.

Darrell was born Dec. 29, 1929 on the family farm in Corinna the son of Howard E and Bessie Lyle (Haines) Hartley. He attended Corinna Union Academy, graduating in 1947. Soon after, he started working as a technician for the Maine Breeding Co-Op. when the Korean War broke out, Darrell enlisted in the United States Army to serve with the 25th Division 8th Army Medical Battalion. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant before his discharge in 1953.

Darrell married Virginia Hicks in the early 50's. After her untimely passing in 1971, Darrell raised their two children, Craig who was 17 and Michelle who was 8.

In 1972, Darrell married his present wife, the former Judie Dunning.

As a young boy Darrell dreamed of joining the Maine State Police. In 1957 his dream was realized when he graduated from the Maine State Police Academy as a new Trooper. Darrell served most of his 27-years career with Troop E in Orono. He also worked for a three-year period with Troop I, Interstate and the last seven years as a Corporal Detective in the Licensing Bureau at State police Headquarters in Augusta. After his retirement in the early 80's, Darrell trained at Quantico, Virginia, with the U.S. Marshals Service. He was assigned to the Federal Court in Bangor.

Darrell left the Marshals Service position after five years when the Code Enforcement Officer's position became available in his home Town of Corinna. Before long, he was also serving in this capacity in the communities of Exeter, Detroit, and Burnham. Within a year, Darrell took on another role for these communities as a Licensed Plumbing Inspector and added Dover-Foxcroft and Garland to the list. Due to failing health, Darrell retired at the age of 75. Although he wore many hats, he is proudest of the time he spent as a Maine State Trooper.
