Cluny's Story

PRESQUE ISLE - Cluny B. McPherson, 85, passed away Monday, February 8, 2016, at his home. He was born June 10, 1930, in Presque Isle, the son of James Cluny and Amy (Beckwith) McPherson.

A graduate of Presque Isle High School, Cluny was the valedictorian of the class of 1947. He continued his education at the University of Maine at Orono and graduated in 1951 receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, Economics and Farm Management. On June 27, 1952, Cluny married Effie Watson and two weeks later left to serve in the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He returned from the war to farm for 12 years with his father and brother. Cluny was a member of the Central Aroostook Young Farmers Association and was president in 1963. Leaving farming he went to work for Farmers Home Administration where he worked in the Fort Fairfield, Caribou, and Presque Isle offices. At his retirement he was the County Supervisor and had worked for FmHA for 23 years. Cluny was active in local government. He was elected in 1963 and served eight years on the SAD#1 School Board and was chairman of the board from 1970-1971. During that time he was presented a national "Distinctive Award of Merit" recognizing the school directors in the construction of a regional technical addition to Presque Isle High School. In 1972 Cluny was elected to serve on the City Council. In 2000 he was elected again after winning as a write-in candidate. Cluny served on the Presque Isle Water District as a trustee from 1991-1997. He was a past member of the Presque Isle Rotary Club and Presque Isle Historical Society. As an avid golfer he served on the Presque Isle Country Club Board of Directors and was a past president. He volunteered time on the construction of the new maintenance building and was recognized and honored with a plaque that hangs on the building. He enjoyed playing golf with his children and especially his golf partner, Ed Hews. As much as he left farming he never lost his love of the farm. He loved to grow vegetables and distribute them to family and friends. His pumpkin harvest was his favorite and well known to neighbors and those that followed Facebook. Cluny loved his family and was proud of the adults they had become. He enjoyed all the card games, cookouts, and activities with family, friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his loving family: wife, Effie (Watson) McPherson of Presque Isle; two sons, James and his wife, Cathy, of Windham and Robert of Seabrook, NH; two daughters, Kathy Maynard and her husband, Edward, of Presque Isle and Dolly Jo McPherson of Exeter, NH; two grandchildren, Kate and Scott McPherson of Windham; brothers and sisters-in-law, Stanley and Sharon Watson, George and Sue Watson, Carolyn Watson, Joyce Watson and Doreen Hussey McPherson; special nieces and nephews.
