- Claire Michaud passed away peacefully on January 15, 2017, at the age of 90 in Auburn, ME. Claire was born Claire Kathleen Kirby on June 2, 1926, in Brownville Jct., Maine, daughter of William and Helen Kirby. As the oldest of nine children, Claire was both a sister and mother to her siblings and offered love and support whenever they needed her.
Claire met her future husband, John Michaud, working for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. They were married on June 22, 1948, and celebrated 65 years of marriage. Over the years, Claire and John called Minto, NB, Caribou, ME, Fredericton, NB, Guilford, ME, and Dade City, FL, their home.
Claire was a homemaker and gifted baker and raised four children. John was a square dance caller and teacher and they were well known in the square dancing communities throughout Maine and New Brunswick. Together they ran the J-Bar-K square dance shop out of their home in Caribou in the 1960's.
For three weeks out of the year, Claire, like so many Aroostook County moms, supported the annual harvest at home and in the potato fields. For many years, Claire packed multiple lunches, managed the onslaught of field dirt of four kids, and lead the rise-and-shine for the family at 5 a.m. every day.
Claire is survived by her four children, Maurice of Dade City, FL, J. Paul of Ellsworth, ME, Paula of Jacksonville, FL, and Gregory (and Rebecca) of Freeport, ME; her four grandchildren, Drew, Aidan, Adam, and Noah, and her sisters; Doris Kirby, Joan Kirby, Carmen Morris, and Theresa Dyer. She was predeceased by her husband John Maurice Michaud, and her brothers and sisters, Audrey Ferguson, Helen McCafferty, Patrick Kirby, and Maurice Kirby.
A funeral Mass will be at St. Jude's Catholic Church at 134 Main Street in Freeport, ME, on Thursday, January 19, 2017, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers an online Gift of Remembrance can be made at the Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Auburn, ME.
