Clair's Story

WINTER HARBOR - Clair B. "Cook" Whitten Jr. was born on February 10, 1965, and left this world unexpectedly and all too soon on March 12, 2015. He was the son of the late Clair B. Whitten Sr. and Truth (Leighton) Whitten. He attended Winter Harbor Grammar School and graduated from Sumner Memorial High School with the class of 1983. Even before graduation, he became a working partner of the family business, A. R. Whitten and Son, Inc., started by his grandfather in the early 1950s and nurtured by his father for nearly 60 years. After his father's retirement, Cook took over the reins and remained steadfast and true to that legacy until his final day.

He was hard working, talented at his trade, and had an uncanny ability to do anything he set his mind to and do it to perfection. He lived life with gusto and was happiest when spending time with his family. Cook loved the ocean and was in his glory, chasing a tuna from the tower of C. C. & Water. He relaxed and enjoyed his time at his camps on Jones Pond and Township 16. He loved to hunt, fish, snowmobile, garden and any/all outdoor activities. He was a wonderful cook and loved to bring people together around his table. He had a take-charge personality, could be direct and gruff, but was blessed with a heart as big as the outdoors; as all who knew him can attest.

Cook was extremely proud to share with his daughter, Morgan, the distinction of belonging to the Maine Antler and Skull Trophy Club's Royal Crown, having bagged a deer, moose, bear and turkey in the same season. Cook was rarely seen without his faithful and "perfect" canine companion, Scout. He was a member of the Winter Harbor Masonic Lodge #192 and Acadia Chapter #31 in Ellsworth.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 24 years, Lori (Brooks) Whitten; and his children, Morgan and Dylan, all of Winter Harbor; "daughters," Hannah and Ricky; his mother, Truth; mother-in-law, Patricia (Dow) Brooks; his sister, Michelle Bierman and husband, Michael, of Hancock; his brother-in-law, Mike Brooks of Winter Harbor; brother-in-law, Keven Brooks and fiancee, Billie-Jo Stanwood; sister-in-law, Stacy Landeen and husband, Justin; sister-in-law, Tricia Moore and husband, Gary; sister-in-law, Cheri Brooks, all of Gouldsboro; nieces and nephews, Courtney and Ali Bierman, Danielle, Tylar and Amanda Brooks, Justin, Cody and Kyle Brooks, Jessica Whitaker, Page and Jason Jacobs, Casey Brooks, Taya and Jayda Moore; cousins, Tommy Smith, Crystal King, Peter McKenzie and wife, Stephanie, and the late John Whitten McKenzie; his valued and competent crew, Robert, Bobby, Scott, Blake, Anthony, John, Rob and Terry; many specials friends too numerous to mention. He was predeceased in this life by his father; father-in-law, David Brooks; and grandparents.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 20, at Sumner Memorial High School. There will be no visiting hours.
