Charles's Story

BUCKSPORT - Charles F. Wentworth, 91, of Bucksport passed away peacefully with his family by his side Monday, August 10. He was born in Bucksport on January 10, 1924, the son of George and Nellie Wentworth.

"Chink," as he was known by his friends, was a 1942 graduate of Bucksport High School, and later received aviation training in Houlton, Me. He joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Randall in the South Pacific theatre as a Pharmacist's Mate. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1946 he went to work at the Maine Seaboard Paper Co., which later became St. Regis Paper Company, and worked there until his retirement in 1986. In 1946 he was married to Barbara Wight of Bucksport, where they raised five children. He was a high school baseball and basketball official in Eastern Maine, serving as a member of IAABO Board 111. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time at home with his family through the years. Chink was a lifetime communicant at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church in Bucksport, where he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an umpire and coach for the Bucksport Little League, and played for the Bucksport A.A. baseball team in the 50's. Charlie was first team All Hancock County for the 1942 county basketball tournament.

He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Barbara, parents George and Nellie Wentworth, brother's George, John, William, and grandson George.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Curtis of Portland, sons Charles Wentworth Jr. and wife Brigid of Verona Island, John and wife Jane of Pownal, Daniel and wife Stormi of Verona Island, James and wife Sue also of Verona Island, and sister in law Tina Wentworth of Bucksport.

Charles was deeply loved by all his grandchildren, Robbie Curtis, Kristen Spiller, Katie Gillespie, Cory Johnson, Heather Lanpher, Rachel Wentworth, Mary Wentworth, Martin Wentworth, Maggie Wentworth, Joe Wentworth, Laura Wentworth, John Wentworth II, Kate Wentworth, James Wentworth, Jason Wentworth, Andrew Wentworth, Peter Wentworth, Cameron Wentworth, and Michael Wentworth. Charles also had 16 great-grandchildren.

The Wentworth family invites relatives and friends to a celebration of Charles' life Thursday, August 13, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home 28 Elm St., Bucksport from 5p.m. to 7p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Friday, August 14 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev.Father Olusola Adewole will officiate the mass. He will be interred at the St.Vincent de Paul cemetery in Bucksport.
