OLD TOWN - Charles "Charlie" Richard Stevens, 88, died March 30, 2015, at a Bangor hospital. He was born November 11, 1926, in Calais, a son of Charles A and Maude (Wentworth) Stevens.
Charlie was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy in 1947 and served as a Merchant Marine and as a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve for 16 years. He retired from the Old Town Paper mill in 1988 as the Maintenance Supervisor. Charlie was an active member of the Old Town United Methodist Church where he served on the building committee and in the Methodist Men's Club. Charlie was active in his community and served with the Old Town Rotary Club , including being club president in 1983, active with the boy scouts, and on the Old Town Museum board. Charlie enjoyed his camp at Pushaw Lake and hunting and fishing. He will be fondly remembered as an avid conversationalist and as an avid yard saler and flea marketer.
He is survived by his wife Ellen; children, son Charles Roscoe Stevens and his wife Pat of Magnolia, AR; daughter Laura Gould and her husband Gene of Hillsboro, NH; son Thomas Stevens and his wife Claudia of Mapleton, son Mark Stevens and his wife Debbie of Naples, step daughter Susan Stebbins and her wife Alison MacDonald of North Hampton, MA, step daughter Michelle Quinn and her husband Robert of Bridgewater, MA; step son-in-law Joseph Palmieri of Bridgewater; 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; special friends Marcella Spruce, David and Ann Soule, and many other friends too numerous to mention. He was predeceased by his first wife Shirley Faith Stevens in 1997, and step-daughter Cynthia Palmieri.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted 2PM Friday at the Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where friends may call from 12 noon until time of service. Spring burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles Stevens Scholarship Fund, c/o Old Town High School, 203 Stillwater Ave., Old Town, ME 04468.
