- Charles Walter Goddard, 88, of East Millinocket and Ambajejus Lake, passed away peacefully in Carlisle, PA, on September 13, 2016, with his daughters by his side. He was born in Millinocket to Bertram and Marguerite Goddard and attended Schenck High School.
He graduated from the University of Maine in 1950, where he majored in education and excelled in basketball. He married, taught high school and coached basketball in Camden and Lubec before joining the Great Northern Paper Company. With the help of relatives, he built the family home on Cedar Street, and his camp. He enjoyed fishing and hunting trips with lifelong friends, and regaled us with those stories for decades afterwards. He and Missy, his Brittany Spaniel, enjoyed farm sitting for his much-loved cousin, Linda Adams Trickey. Nothing pleased him more than cooking Chernobyl chicken over the fire at camp for family and friends. After retirement, he spent most of his time at his camp, or becoming a world traveler with Heidi and Paul, or in Texas with his beloved companion, Greta. After Gretas passing, he lived in Carlisle, PA, during the winter. He was inducted into the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
Charlie is survived by daughters, Peggy Ferguson of Lincoln, Cheryl Hale (Robert) of Carlisle, PA, and Heidi Goddard (Paul Cerqua) of Chelmsford, MA; 4 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; his brother, Bert (Rose); sister-in-law, Lorie Goddard; and the mother of his children, Betty Goddard. Many very special nieces and nephews and the entire Hanaway family called him Uncle Charlie and meant the world to him. He was predeceased by his parents; his son, Charles Jr. (Chuckie); brother Richard; and Greta Hanaway.
Charlie was a Catholic. A Celebration of Life will be held in summer 2017 at Charlie's camp. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Health and Counseling Hospice or your local animal shelter.
