BUCKSPORT - Charles R. Downes, 90, of Bucksport, passed away peacefully June 4, 2015 at Maine Veterans Home Bangor. He was born April 15, 1925 in Penobscot, the son of Charles Frank and Evelyn (Weed) Downes.
He was married to his beloved wife Yvonne (Atwood) for 69 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy, as a second class motor-machinist on the submarine USS Blenny. After the war he worked as a mechanic and millwright at St. Regis where he retired, April 1986. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, motorcycling, dancing and his daily trips to McDonald's with his oldest son Ray.
He is survived by his wife Yvonne of Bucksport, brother; Bernie and Janet of Cape Coral, FL, sons; Richard and Sally, Robert and Kathy all of Bucksport, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, in laws; Raymond and Thiry Atwood, Barbara Thomas, Ernest and Maxine Atwood, Wilford and Martha Atwood, Alden Arnold, Frederick and Betsy Atwood, Joanne Bridges and Herbert and Irene Atwood. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by one son Raymond, one sister Maurine Grindle.
Family and friends will gather for visitation from 5-7 pm. on Tuesday June 9, 2015 at Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home 28 Elm St. Bucksport, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday June 10, 2015 with Pastor Peter Remick officiating.
