ALTON - Charles Jordan "Pud" Cummings of Alton, ME and Zephyrhills, FL passed away peacefully on December 29, 2014 with Melissa, his wife of 68 yrs. by his side.
Pud was born in Maxfield, ME on August 12, 1924 the eldest son of Harold and Flossie Sawyer Cummings. He grew up on Hillcrest Farm and attended Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, ME graduating in 1941. After two years at the University of Maine, he joined the US Army where he served his country in the Pacific Theater of WWII. After returning from the war in October of 1946 he married his long time sweetheart, Melissa Lugdon, on December 28, 1946 and then graduated from the University of Maine class of 1949 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
In 1949, Pud and Melissa started Windy Ridge Farm in South LaGrange, ME, a poultry business that they jointly operated for 41 yrs. Windy Ridge provided fresh eggs to over 50 stores and restaurants in central Maine. During the early years in South LaGrange he worked for the University of Maine Extension Service teaching On-Farm training to numbers of future farmers, many who became life-long friends. He was also a field representative of the Eastern States Farmer's Exchange later Agway.
Pud was actively involved in his greater community being a member and Past Master of Composite Lodge #168, and Past Patron of the Doric Chapter of the Eastern Star. He served on the LaGrange school board for 15 yrs. and was an active member of the LaGrange American Legion.
He also enjoyed many other activities all of which were done hand in hand with Melissa; cards, snowmobiling, square dancing, fishing, the Red Sox, golf, embracing the activities and careers of their children and grandchildren. According to his grandchildren he was a "jack of all trades" and "could fix anything".
Pud and Melissa enjoyed 30 yrs. of retirement "play" in Zephyrhills, FL where they developed many ever-lasting friendships. In their spare time they traveled to 49 of the 50 states.
He is survived by his wife of 68 yrs, Melissa Lugdon; one brother, Clayton "Tane" of VA, a special sister in-law, Delma Smith of FL; his daughter, Peg and Darrell Luce of Alton; son, Rod and Charlene of Auburn; and son, Doug and Lori of Bowerbank. He was most proud of his seven grandchildren Joel and Michelle Cummings of Auburn; Perry and Danielle Lewis of Alaska; Lori Anne and David Gile of Monmouth; Derek and Liesl Lewis of Alaska; Jodi and Chris McGary of Dover-Foxcroft; Jason and Christy Cummings of Massachusetts; Jenn and Eric Saucier of Pittsfield. They have provided him with 18 great grandchildren who have all enjoyed special moments with Grampie Pud riding on the golf cart. He was predeceased by four siblings; Vivian "Viv" Welch, Kenneth "Krit" Cummings, Marjorie "Mudge" Gray and Norman "Bom" Cummings.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2015.
