Catherine's Story

FRANKLIN - Catherine Herrick Griffin, 82, died May 25, 2014 at Golden Acres after a long illness. She was born in Brewer, September 25, 1931, the daughter of Robert W. and Sara J. (Astbury) Herrick.

Catherine was the youngest of 10 children who grew up on the Bayside Road in Ellsworth. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1949. Cathy married George T. Tracy of Addison in 1950; the marriage later ended in divorce. In 1956 she married Gordon M. Swett in Boston. They resided in Ellsworth until his untimely death on July 15, 1977. They enjoyed family vacations at Flanders Pond, playing cards with friends, attending Shrine events, and family get-togethers. Cathy later married Herman "Whitey" Griffin and they lived at Meadowview Apartments, Ellsworth. He passed away in 1989. She worked several years at Collier's Nursing Home as a CNA. She also worked at Courtland Rehab & Living Center as a CNA and Assistant Activity Director. After retirement, she loved playing Liverpool Rummy with her sisters, family and friends. She was a former member of the Union Congregational Church of Ellsworth Falls, Bayside Grange, and Irene Chapter #97 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her children, Debbie Tracy Winters and husband, Steve of Forks, WA, David Tracy and wife, Sue of Trenton, Keith Swett and wife, Andrea of Ellsworth, Karen Swett Rogers and husband, Jeffrey of Eastbrook, Joanne Swett Merchant of Panama City Beach, FL; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Gertrude Linscott of Ellsworth; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Leamon, Ernest, Harold, Frank, and Bud Herrick; sisters, Evelyn Moore, Helen Cushing and most recently Doris Hamilton; grandson, Jamie Childers; and best friend, Barbara Colson.

Calling hours will be held 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Jordan-Fernald, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth, where a funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday with Pastor Bob Maddocks offficiating. Interment will be at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
