ELKINS, W. VA. - Carroll "Browne" Simmons, age 82 years, a resident of Elkins, departed this life Sunday morning, December 21, 2014 at Valentines Personal Care Home with hospice care at Beverly, WV. He had been in declining health and lost his courageous battle with melanoma. He was born Sunday, June 12, 1932 at Brushy Run, WV, a son of the late William Edward and Beulah Kimble Simmons.
On June 17, 1954 at Monticello, Maine, he was married to the former Zona C. Rush, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Rayna Parsons of Cleveland, OH, Sherry Simmons of Elkins, WV, Lisa Jones of Pittsburgh, PA; and three grandchildren James Jonathan and Charles. He is also survived by special cousins Ester Simmons and Martha Burger Simmons as well as his "Hunting Buddy" Herman Smith.
He attended Franklin High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy on July 7, 1949 at Baltimore, MD. His duty assignment was aboard the USS Rich Destroyer in Korea and was discharged on March 30, 1953. He was a graduate of Potomac State College with the Class of 1955 with an Associate's Degree and from West Virginia University with the Class of 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree. He was employed following graduation with Sears Roebuck and Company at Huntington, WV as an accountant, transferring to Washington, D.C. and then to Baltimore, MD. He was promoted to Comptroller at the Baltimore Montclomen Store and then to Washington Bladensburg. He then transferred to Merchandising at the Wisconsin Avenue, Arlington, VA store and promoted to Zone Merchandise Manager of seventeen stores with office in Pittsburgh, PA. He was then promoted to Management having managed stores in Williamson, WV, Fairmont, WV, and Charleston Town Center.
He was an active member of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce, where he was elected Citizen of the Year; had served as President of United Way as well as campaign chairman; as President of the Mountaineer Area Boy Scouts of American, being a District Chairman and receiving the Silver Beaver Award; as President of the Fairmont Industrial Corporation; the Advisory Board of Fairmont State College; as President of the Middletown Mall Association; as a Rotary Club Member; a member of WV Chamber of Commerce; as President of the WV Retailers Association; as President of the Merchants Association of the Charleston Town Center; and as a member of the Town Center Lions Club. He retired on July 31, 1987.
He was certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and as a certified National Registered EMT-Paramedic having been a member of the Randolph County Emergency Squad Volunteers. He was a member of the Canaan Valley Professional Ski Patrol, the National Ski Patrol and the First United Methodist Church of Elkins.
The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Elkins, from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Simmons will be moved to the First United Methodist Church at Elkins, where final rites will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. The Rev. Dallas Forren will officiate and entombment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Gilman, WV, where the United States Navy, the H. W. Daniel's Post # 29, American Legion and the Tygarts Valley Post # 3647, Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
