Orrington - Carroll Burton Adams, 86, died peacefully on January 16, 2017, in Bangor, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 19, 1930, in Bangor, Maine, the son of the late Kenneth and Eunice (Graham) Adams. He was married to Elaine Karlson in 1959 until her death in 1985. He later married Faye Bell in 1996 and they were together until her passing in 2008.
Carroll joined the US Navy in 1952 and served through 1956. He then attended Barrington College in Barrington, RI, and then North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. Carroll became the Assistant Pastor of Bethany Covenant Church in New Britain, CT. He also became the Director of Industrial Recreation Federation and Public Relations and Coordinator in New Haven, CT. Carroll also was the Associate Executive Director for the Quincy YMCA in Quincy, MA. In 1972, Carroll and Elaine returned to Maine where he worked as a Sales Representative for Bangor and Ellsworth Automotive Dealers. Carroll spent 10 years working as a Program Sargent for the Penobscot County Sheriff Office in Bangor. He spent his later years working part time as a reader for Iris Network in Portland and as a part time long and short distance driver for Darlings Auto Mall in Ellsworth.
He was a member of the Brewer American Legion Post 98, a current member of the Board of Directors and Past President of the Curran Homestead and Living History Farm, a Founding Director and Past President of the Orrington Housing Corporation and served as a past member of the board of Selectman for the town of Orrington. He attended the East Orrington Congregational Church for many years and also was a part of the Orrington Lighthouse Church of God.
Carroll is survived by four stepchildren, Sue Hughes, Dan McQuarrie, Dave McQuarrie and Brian McQuarrie; a special step granddaughter, Sarah Hopkins, who took time to visit with Carroll; and many step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his two wives; his parents; four brothers, Ellery, Ray, Clair, and Frederick; and five sisters, Leatha, Nellie, Marion, Marjorie and Hilda.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Carroll's life at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017, at the East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road, Orrington, Maine, 04474. Refreshments will be shared following the service. A committal will be held in the summer at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, in Bangor, with military honors being presented for his service to our country.
