CARMEL - Bradford A. Small, 80, passed away September 28, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. He was born in Carmel, Maine on September 6, 1934, son of the late Arthur B. and Barbara (Bradford) Small.
Brad graduated from Carmel High School in 1952, where he excelled in sports as well as being a member of the National Honors Society. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force and served during the Korean War.
In 1958, Brad graduated from the Maine State Police Academy. Beginning as a rural patrol Trooper, the highlights of his twenty year career included assignment to the security detail of then Governor John H. Reed, promotion to Sergeant in 1967, and serving as the Supervisory Sergeant in the Communications Division at Augusta headquarters. He graduated Keeler Polygraph Institute and attended St. Anselm and Delta Colleges.He was later promoted to Lieutenant at age 41 and commanded the State Police Crime Lab, He retired in 1978, and later worked as a licensed private investigator, in addition to running his own polygraph business.
Brad was an avid outdoorsman and shared this passion with his sons. They spent many days traversing the Maine woods, sometimes walking miles to reach one of his many "secret" locations. An expert marksman, Brad won many state and national shooting competitions as part of the Maine State Police Pistol Team. What do you do with over 100 trophies?
Brad had a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and was an avid reader of all genres, from poetry to history. His other interests included gardening, photography, woodworking, competitive shooting, and gunsmithing. His culinary skills were beyond compare, and "Braddy's pickles" were much anticipated by family and friends. Brad always had a joke, limerick, or story to share. His sense of humor was a delight to many and he was pleased to have passed this trait along to his children and grandchildren. Brad was extremely proud of his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments.
Bradford was predeceased by his parents, his former wife, Geraldine Normand and their son, Patrick. He is survived by his children: Michael and wife, Renee of Corinth; Matthew and companion, Brenda of Milford; and Barbara Van Uden and husband, James of Hampden. Grandchildren: Megan Small; Elizabeth Swazey and husband, Bronson; Catherine Small; Alex Van Uden; and Sean Small. Survivors also include his Uncle Lindwood and wife, Shirley Bradford; his eldest relative Aunt Opal Smith; his brother, Douglas and wife, Gloria Small; sister, Mary Lou Hargreaves; brother, Duane Small and partner, David Rhinehart; several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin, Dorice Lamorey.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Highland Cemetery, 593 Main Rd/Route 2, Carmel. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Union Congregational Church, Plymouth Road, Carmel.
