BUCKSPORT - Boyd Alan Ward, of Bucksport, passed away peacefully Monday, June 30, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Bangor after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in Freedom on July 23, 1939 the beloved son of Raymond F. Ward and Grace (Huff) Ward.
Boyd graduated from Freedom Academy in 1957 and from Maine Maritime Academy in 1960 as an Engineer and Commissioned Officer in the Merchant Marines. He worked for Isbranston Shipping Lines for several years traveling to many countries. He later worked for Scott Paper Co., Winslow, Maine Maritime Academy, Castine, Bath Iron Works, Bath, Penobscot Energy Recovery Company, Orrington, and retired from the Bangor School Department as Maintenance Supervisor.
Boyd married Sandra Jean Clark on October 21, 1967 in Freedom, and they raised four children. Boyd was a member of Unity Lodge No. 0058 in Thorndike for 50 plus years, and attended the North Bucksport United Methodist Church.
Boyd had a great love of the outdoors from an early age. In his free time he could be found hunting, fishing, trapping, fur buying, and enjoying the outdoors. He was proprietor of Ashland Bear Camps in Ashland for many years guiding hunters and he was known by his clients as "The Bear Man".
Boyd had a deep love for his family and he will be greatly missed.
Boyd was predeceased by his parents, son, Raymond O. Ward, his granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Skartvedt, sister, Muriel Grainer, paternal grandparents, Oley and Florence Ward, and maternal grandparents, Gladys and Asmasa Huff. Boyd is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Sandra Jean Clark Ward, daughters, Allison Skartvedt, husband, Ward, granddaughters, Jennifer and Samantha of Henderson, NV, Christy Goodwin and grandson, Corey of Dover-Foxcroft, Sarah Semple, and granddaughters, Trinidy and Meredith of Bucksport, and grandson, RCT Damon Klinedinst of Parris Island, South Carolina, sister, Brenda Ward Moody, husband, Carl of Liberty. Also, surviving is his mother-in-law, June Clark, of Orono, and stepfather, William Blaisdell of Montville. Uncles, Arthur Young of Pittsfield, Roy (Marguerite) Ward of Freedom, and Aunt Sharon Madore of Burnham, sister and brothers-in-law, Simone (Clark) Sommers and husband, Gary, of Salem, New Hampshire, and Steve Clark and wife, Dawn, of Veazie. Also, many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Freedom, with Pastor Jon Ouellette officiating. A reception will follow at the Freedom Grange Hall and all are welcome to attend. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maine Parkinson Society, Attn.
