Betty's Story

HARRINGTON - Betty L. "Lovey" Hammond, 71, of Harrington passed away peacefully March 13, 2014, at her daughter's home in Milbridge, surrounded by her family, ending her courageous battle with cancer. Betty was born Dec. 21, 1942, and grew up in Bangor.

Betty is survived by her three children and their spouses, Debra and Toodie Dinsmore of Milbridge, Rose and Scott Santerre of Cherryfield, and Elwyn "Charles" Hammond of Windham; sister, Patsy and Scott Keen of Arizona; and brothers, Phillip and Judy White of Utah, Joe White of New Hampshire, and Del White and Richard Monson of Australia. Betty was the grandmother of seven, Kenneth and wife, Kristi, Michael and wife, Tabitha, Natashia and husband, Chris, Richard and wife, Ashley, Joshua and wife, Missy, Breannia, Scott S. II, Roxanne, Josh, and Devon; and a very special nephew, Dale and wife, Ellen White; Betty had three stepgrandchildren. She was a great-grandmother of nine, Brettin, Logan, Kayla, Haley, Summer, Michael II, Tyler, Griffin, and Emma; and she had five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Betty loved to play with us kids, ice skating, sliding with us and all the neighbors' kids. Betty worked at Wyman's Factory, then she went to the radar site as a security guard. She then started working on the lobster boat with her husband; then on the ambulance where she worked for 28 years; Narraguagus Bay Nursing home as a transport person; and with the Red Cross Blood drive for many years. She attended the Harrington Baptist Church. Lovey loved to line dance. She and her group of dancing friends always went to Jordan's Wednesday night to line dance. She loved to swim in her pool with her kids and grandkids. She was a person who could get along with everyone. Betty would help anyone that needed it.

Betty was predeceased by her parents, Rose (DeRoshaier) White and Elwyn "Bud" White; her husband, Richard F. Hammond Sr., of 46 years; her daughter, Nancy (Hammond) Lund Spencer; her son, Richard F. Hammond Jr.; and grandson, Richard Francis Hammond III.

Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge Chapel, 47 Main St., Milbridge. A funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Harrington Baptist Church, Main Street, Harrington. All donations may be sent to Debra Dinsmore, 154 North Main St., Milbridge, ME 04658.
