Bette's Story

WEST SEBOEIS - Bette M. Shields, 83, wife of the late Leighton E. Shields, Sr., passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at a St. Joseph's Hospital, with her family by her side. She was born June 8, 1931 in Island Falls, the daughter of Thomas and Gertha (Main) O'Hara.

Bette was a very social being, and loved spending time visiting with friends at Angelo's in Millinocket, or her neighbors at West Seboeis, her own little slice of heaven on earth. She was a very independent person, and would often go visit friends and family in the County on her own. The activities of her family meant the world to her, and Bette loved not only following those of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, but also the musical adventures of her sons. Christmastime was very special to Bette, as she transformed her entire house into a Christmas-themed Teddy Bear exhibit. In spare time, she enjoyed watching birds, and also following the PGA on television. Bette will be missed by her many family and friends.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry Shields of Brownville, Gene Shields and Katie Vargas of Millinocket, and David Shields and Mary Ann Mosquito of Fairfield; two grandchildren, Kris Shields and Miranda Achorn of Millinocket and their children, Ali and Aidan, and Amy Saucier and her husband Steve of Glenburn and their children Brooklyn and Brody; a brother, Darrell Malone and his wife June of Ludlow; a half sister, Joyce Walters and her husband Cliff of North Carolina; a half brother, Butch O'Hara; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bette will also be missed by her loving West Seboeis family, Karen Shields, Betty Cole, and Joey, Lori, Alisha, and Joseph Arsenault. In addition to her husband and parents, Bette was predeceased by her second father, Pearl Malone, and two brothers, Ronald and Richard O'Hara.

Bette received amazing and compassionate care from the nursing staff at the CCU of St. Joseph's Hospital, for which the family is especially grateful.

Friends are invited to visit with the family 1-3 P.M. Tuesday, March 17 at the Lamson Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, with funeral services beginning at 3 P.M. Spring interment will be at the Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Bette may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462.
