BUCKSPORT - Barbara Francis (Luce) Mitchell passed away Saturday January 31, 2015 at a Bangor Hospital. The daughter of George Delmont Luce originally of Hallowell and Henrietta (Coffey) Luce originally of Gardiner, she was born April 5, 1933 in Ellsworth.
Barbara graduated from Ellsworth High School and Gorham State Teacher's College. She taught for years at Bucksport and Orland schools, 6th, 7th and 8th grades, and is remembered for her passion for history, sense of humor and a desire for others to be comfortable in their own skin. She strongly believed that ALL young people have a good opportunity to learn. She created a wonderfully memorable and extraordinary upbringing for her son.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Darrold Mitchell originally of Troy, son and daughter in law Dan and Nancy Mitchell of Sidney, grandson; Donavon of Bangor, sister in law Linda Mitchell of Pittsfield, brother in law Harold Mitchell of Washington, Oklahoma and special friends; Phe, Passage and Richard Crampton, Heart Pond in Orland also family dogs; Myrtle, Mac and especially Molly.
Her places were the house on the hill overlooking Hancock Pond and Great Pond Mountain in Hueytown, East Bucksport, "Luce Timbers", her parent's camp on Cobbosseeconte Lake in East Winthrop, and perhaps most of all the camp she built and shared with Darrold, Dan, family and friends on Cobbossee's West Gardiner shore where she fished from "The Frill" and had such good sunset views. The Spanish onions are in bloom!
At Barbara's request there will be no funeral service, but her memory will be celebrated at a special memorial gathering for family and friends this coming summer at Lake Cobbosseeconte. Warm thanks go to the crew of St. Joseph' Memorial Hospital critical care unit, and doctors and nursing staff of the 6th floor. Their kindness, professionalism, and care to make everyone, especially Barbara comfortable went above and beyond. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Buck Memorial Library P.O.
