Ava Louise (Bickford) Weaver
Dec 11, 1928 - Mar 5, 2017
- Ava (Bickford) Weaver, 88, went to be with the lord on March 5th, 2017. She was born on the farm at White's Corner, Winterport, on December 11, 1928. Her parents were Walter and Agnes (Towers) Bickford. She attended the one-room school located on the family farm. When the schoolhouse burned, she went to the village for Grades 7 and 8.
Ava became a member of Northern Light Grange, Winterport, and transferred to Morning light Grange in Monroe. She was an officer in each and became affiliated with Waldo County Pomona Grange, State and National.
She attended Monroe High School from which she graduated in 1947. She was a much loved domestic worker in Brooks, Belfast and Winterport. While attending Beal's College in Bangor, she worked at the Seven Up Bottling Company and at W.T. Grant's. She became employed at Clement's Hatchery in Winterport as an office secretary.
On September 24, 1950, she was married in a home wedding to Raymond Weaver of Monroe. Early in 1951, Ava traveled to Georgia to be with Ray at Fort Benning. The trip south was a venture for her for she had never traveled alone and out-of-state. While there, she and Ray returned home to attend the funeral services of her father.
Ray was discharged in 1953, and for a while they lived with her mother. They purchased a farm on the Haley Road where they raised potatoes. A lot of family effort, including Ava's, went into planting, harvesting, storing and marketing acres of potatoes.
Ava shared and received love from all those she met. Upon completion of a ten-week training course, she was employed at the Bradbury Memorial Nursing Home in Belfast. As a CNA she could share her love with patients who so much needed it.
She and Ray purchased and operated Weaver's Market, now Millie's, in Frankfort for many years. Ava was well known throughout Waldo County for her knack of making a variety of homemade doughnuts. Hunters feasted on them during the hunting season and returned home with an ample supply.
Operating the store was a lot of work for Ava. Often she would be cooking, doing dishes, pumping gas and tending the cash register. Ava gave an unending love to her husband and was a proud mother of six children. They are Barbara and Albert Aldus, Paul and Joyce Weaver, Stephen and Tina Weaver, Linda and Victor Smith, David and Martha Weaver and Susan and Jeffrey Littlefield. She was devoted to her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren (with the newest being born on the day of her passing), nieces and nephews.
A very special brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Dorothy Bickford, and cousins survive her.
She was predeceased by her parents, her husband; a sister, Alice Bickford; sister, Elnora Kingsbury; and brother-in-law, Stewart Kingsbury.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Monroe Community Church on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 2:00 P.M.
