Castine - Anne Ferris Tenney, 95, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2017, after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Florence, MA, on February 21, 1922, to the late Wallace and Florence Howes.
Anne earned a BA in English from Smith College in 1944 and upon graduation, joined the Waves as an Ensign. Her orders took her to the Eastern Sea Frontier Headquarters of the Navy, where she was an active participant in the anti-German submarine war effort. It was there that she met her future husband, Fred Ferris. They were married in 1945 and had two sons.
As the children grew, Anne was active in her community as a Cub Scout Den Mother, leader in the Pennington (NJ) Women's Club, supporter of the Pennington midget football team and much more. Career shifts moved the family to Concord, MA, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and finally back to Milton, MA, where Fred died suddenly in June 1973.
Anne next worked for a time in the admissions department at Curry College in Milton, MA, and later as special assistant to the Headmaster of The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJ. While living in Milton, Anne met David Tenney and they married in 1977. A few years later, in 1981, they moved to Castine, ME, where Anne became a beloved member of the Trinitarian Congregational Parish, volunteered at the Castine Hospital and was an active Castine community participant. After David's death in 1990, Anne continued to live in Castine enjoying her many friends, bridge group, golf and participating in many church and community activities. She relocated to The Cypress in Charlotte, NC in 2011, which became her final home.
Anne is survived by her two sons, Dr. Frederick "Rick" L. Ferris III and wife, Miriam, and Kimball "Kim" H. Ferris and wife, Sue; grandchildren, Kimberley (Jimmy) Thomson, Eric (Liz) Ferris, Kerby Ferris, Lisa Ferris and Jill (Jason) Ferris Harmon; and great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Madison Ferris.
