ETNA - Anita M. Mitchell, 84, passed away peacefully in her home on September 3, 2015, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with a long term illness.
Anita was born on April 10, 1931, in Dexter, the daughter of Albert and Clair (Decker) Clukey. Anita attended; Higgins Classical Institute and then two years of nursing school at Maine General Hospital, when she had to cut her education short to take care of her ill mother. Anita worked as a nurse at Plumber Memorial Hospital in Dexter, Milo Hospital, then was Dr. Paul Burke's personal nurse in Newport. Anita was also the nurse for the town of Etna for multiple years. After retiring from nursing, she became the head cook at Etna-Dixmont School as well as Etna's town treasurer for a few years and served as a ballet clerk for multiple years.
Anita and her husband Fred W. Mitchell were married September of 1954 and they resided in Etna. At the time of her death the couple were celebrating their 61st wedding anniversary. Anita loved hunting, fishing, gardening, canning, playing cards and she was an excellent swimmer. Anita was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother; She very much enjoyed spending quality time with her loving family.
Anita is survived by her husband Fred Mitchell, three children; Steve Mitchell and wife Hollie Mitchell of Etna, Sharon Dow and husband John Dow of Corinth, Barbara Peavey and husband Charles Peavey of Corinna, five grandchildren; Miranda Beck and husband Kris Beck of Fort Fairfield, Megan Chasse and Danielle Dow of Dover-Foxcroft, Mariah Peavey and Kellen Peavey of Corinna, four great grandchildren; Makaila Beck, Mason Mitchell and Rilynn Beck all of Fort Fairfield, Kaylee Chasse of Dover- Foxcroft, many nieces and nephews, and two special close friends Bob and Doris Elston of Etna. She was predeceased by her brother's Omar Clukey, Edward Clukey and his wife Verna Clukey. Survived by one sister-in-law Eleanor Clukey. Anita is also predeceased by a very special dog to her, Sophie.

Friends may call Monday Sept. 7, 2015 from 4 to 6 PM at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center 34 High Street Newport. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday Sept 8, 2015 at 11 AM at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center 34 High St Newport with Rev. Terry McKinley officiating. Burial will follow at the Etna Cemetery.
