Alvin's Story

PITTSFIELD AND NEWPORT - Alvin P. Gray, 91, passed away on February 22, 2015, at Inland Hospital in Waterville.

He was born February 10, 1924, in Brooks, Maine, the son of Albion L. and Aleta P. (Hines) Gray. Al was a lifelong resident of Newport and was employed by H.P Hoods for over 35 years. He was a Life Member of Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge in Newport. During his retirement years, he really enjoyed working part-time at Rowes House of Apples and occasionally picking a few fresh apples to take back to his camp on Lake Sebasticook. 

Al was an avid hunter and fisherman and along with his friends truly enjoyed the time they all spent out at the old Hubbard Farm telling stories, cooking and shooting a few deer.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Donna (Kimball) Gray, in 1994; his sister, Dorothea (Dolly) McGraw of Clinton; and his brother, Albert Gray of Troy.

Alvin is survived by his son, Michael Gray and his wife, Peg, of Pittsfield; his grandchildren, Christine Gray of Pittsfield and Jaime Gray of Chicago; his great-grandchildren, Patrick Cookson, Meghan Cookson and Maxwell Cookson of Pittsfield, Brody Gray and Brooklyn Gray of Newport; one brother, Alton Gray and his wife, Hilda, of Plymouth; his sisters, Iola Gray-Berg of San Antonio and Althea Mishoe of Dayton; a half brother, Edward Gray of Machias; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all the staff at Inland Hospital for their wonderful and compassionate care.

Friends may call Saturday, March 7, 2015, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport. Public Masonic services will be conducted at 2:30 pm during the visitation at the Funeral Home, by the officers of Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge, Newport. Spring internment will be in the Family lot at Riverside Cemetery, Newport, at a date and time to be announced.
