MELBOURNE, FL - Alvin Willington Bowker, Jr., 78 years old, son of the late Etta Mae (Gardner) Bowker and Alvin W. Bowker, Sr. passed away on September 1, 2015 in Melbourne, Florida. His lifelong partner of nearly 40 years, Larry S. Payne and his sister, Jean M. Bowker, and Auntie Arlene Gardner predeceased him.
Alvin was born and raised in New Britian Connecticut, later moved to Machiasport, Maine and retired in Viera, Florida.
Dr. Bowker was awarded a Ph.D. in English Literature from S.U.N.Y. Buffalo. For 29 of his 37 years of teaching, he taught English literature and Composition at the University of Maine at Machias where at the time of his death, was an Emeritus Professor of English.
Alvin, known to many as "Buzz," was passionate about supporting animal rights groups, an avid fan of the cinema and theater, a perpetual novelist and loved music. During his final days Alvin was surrounded and cared for by family and an incredible group of loyal friends, both local and distant, that was all of great importance to him.
Throughout his life he has touched many with his brilliance, kindness and wonderful sense of humor. His warm smile and spirit will forever live on with all who knew him.
He leaves behind Uncles (Maj) Harlan (Dorothy) Gardner and William; extended family, Sharon, Robert, Andrew and Lauren Halula; dear friends; many cousins, and his beloved cat Sophie.
A memorial gathering in remembrance of Alvin and celebration of his life will be announced at a future date. Memorial donations may be made to any Animal Protection Agency or Cancer Society in his honor.
