EASTPORT - Allen Harris, 75, died Sept. 10, 2015 at his home in Eastport. He was born in New Jersey on July 5, 1940 and lived in the New York area until moving to Eastport in 1972.
For many years, Allen produced intricate and exquisite pewter wildlife sculptures with Peregrine Associates. One of his proudest achievements was as a ringleader of the anti-Pittston movement of the 1970's. He tirelessly went door-to-door convincing people to sign a petition asking the City Council to hold public hearings on the matter; his actions were decisive in the defeat of that proposal to build an oil refinery in Eastport. Allen preferred to lead a rather solitary life even as it was filled with many deep friendships. In recent years he helped to keep Eastport more beautiful by picking up stray pieces of trash on his daily walks wearing his old-fashioned headphones tuned in to Beethoven.
A gathering to celebrate Allen's life will be announced at a later date.
