Alice's Story

Deer Isle - Alice E. Shepard passed away peacefully on September 10, 2016, at home with her two daughters at her bedside. Alice was born on June 14, 1924, in Lopez, PA, the daughter of the late Thomas and Efimia (Demasiesoch) Elchak.
After graduating from high school, Alice went onto a business college in New York where she sought employment as a secretary. This is where she met Walter Shepard while he was serving in the U.S. Navy, whom she was later married to for 62 years, prior to his passing in 2008.
They moved back to Deer Isle, Walter's hometown, and started their careers as caretakers on Bear Island and later on Great Spruce Head Island.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by two sons, Walter Jr. and Walter Edward; a son-in-law, Wes; and a granddaughter, Laurie. She was also predeceased by all of her 11 siblings.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth of PA, Rose and her husband, Tom of Deer Isle; 5 grandsons, 19 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are being held at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home in Stonington. Viewing hours will be 6-8pm on Friday, September 16, 2016. Alice's funeral is scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Dowe Eaton will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her name be sent to Hancock County Hospice in Ellsworth. Arrangements entrusted to Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home in Stonington, ME. Online condolences may be shared at www.bragdonkelley.com
