- Alfred Lloyd Smith, 74, died January 17, 2017, at the Maine Veterans Home. He was born July 9, 1942, in Hallowell, Maine, growing up in Castle Hill and Presque Isle, Maine. He was the son of H. Everett and Geneva (Lint) Smith.
Alfred graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1961, where he was member of the Eastern Maine Championship basketball team. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Army deploying to Germany and France from 1961 to 1967. After serving his country he returned to Mapleton working in the Presque Isle area for several years before moving to Bangor. Al lived and worked for almost 40 years in Bangor where he made many long term friends who enjoyed his wit, charm, and oh that smile.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Richard, Philip and Russell. Surviving are his sister, Phyllis "Milly" and husband, Hartson Blackstone, of Washburn; sister-in-law, Marguerite "Peg" (Katen) Smith Groves of Brewer; foster sister, Esther Lyford of Cherryfield; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of Al's life with his friends and family at Judy's in Bangor at a later date. A graveside service with military honors will be held later in the spring at the Fairmont Cemetery, Presque Isle, with a time and date to be announced.
